The road was long. The challenge was enormous. And unfortunately for Gouverneur, so was New Hartford. The Wildcats' memorable season came to an end Wednesday afternoon at St. Lawrence University as Section III champion New Hartford rolled to a 21-0 victory in the Class A state subregional round. Sometimes state tournament games are tense, one-run battles decided by a single swing. This wasn't one of those days. The Spartans arrived in Canton looking every bit like a team with state title aspirations, wasting little time taking control. New Hartford scored twice in the opening inning before breaking things open with seven runs in the second. The Spartans continued to apply pressure throughout the afternoon, adding two in the third, eight in the fourth, and two more in the fifth. While the final score will grab the headlines, it doesn't tell the entire story of what Gouverneur accomplished this season. This was a Wildcats team that battled its way through Section X, earned a sectional championship, and gave its community a reason to pack the stands deep into June. Those accomplishments don't disappear because of one difficult afternoon against one of the state's top programs. New Hartford's offense was led by Amelia Nimey, who reached base five times, collecting four hits, scoring four runs, and driving in five. Norah Galiulo added a double, triple, three RBIs, and two runs scored as the Spartans piled up 11 hits. In the circle, Ruby Gehringer was outstanding. The New Hartford ace carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Gouverneur finally broke through with a two-out single. She finished with 10 strikeouts and one walk in a complete-game effort. For New Hartford, the journey continues. The Spartans improve to 19-2 and advance to face Section II champion Averill Park in the regional round on Saturday. For Gouverneur, the scoreboard may say the season is over, but the memories are not. Sectional champions. Section X representatives. A team that kept playing when nearly everyone else in New York had already put away the cleats. Not the ending the Wildcats wanted, but a season that deserves to be remembered for far more than its final game.
