For three meetings this season, Heuvelton and Harrisville proved they were evenly matched. On Thursday night, with a trip to the Section X Class D Championship on the line, they delivered a semifinal thriller worthy of the rivalry. In a game filled with momentum swings, clutch hits, defensive miscues, and late-inning drama, Harrisville survived a furious Heuvelton challenge and stormed back for a 10-7 victory to punch its ticket to the Class D Finals. The Bulldogs had opportunities from the very beginning. Heuvelton loaded the bases in the opening inning and appeared poised to seize control early, but Harrisville's pitching and defense came up with timely outs to escape the jam unscathed. That set the tone for a game that never allowed either side to get comfortable. Heuvelton grabbed the lead multiple times throughout the afternoon, only to watch Harrisville answer every challenge. Each big hit seemed to be met by an even bigger response as the two North Country powers traded punches in what felt more like a championship game than a semifinal. The game's defining sequence came in the sixth inning. Trailing 4-3 entering the top half, Heuvelton pieced together a rally through aggressive small-ball tactics, patient at-bats, timely hits, and capitalizing on Harrisville miscues. When the dust settled, the Bulldogs had pushed four runs across the plate and suddenly found themselves holding a 7-4 advantage with just six outs separating them from a trip to the finals. Momentum appeared firmly planted in Heuvelton's dugout. Then Harrisville answered. The Pirates erupted in the bottom of the sixth inning, stringing together baserunners and taking advantage of key opportunities. What started as a spark quickly became an avalanche. Harrisville's offense came alive, turning a three-run deficit into a stunning six-run inning and a 10-7 lead that completely flipped the game on its head. The rally showcased the resilience that has defined Harrisville all season. Heuvelton continued to battle until the final out, but the Pirates were able to close the door and complete the comeback victory. Reynolds helped power the Bulldogs' offense with several key hits throughout the contest, providing much of the firepower that kept Heuvelton in front for much of the afternoon. For Harrisville, Patchin delivered one of the game's biggest moments with a clutch RBI single during the comeback effort, while a modified call-up injected energy and enthusiasm into the Pirates' lineup and dugout when it was needed most. In the end, Harrisville proved why championship teams are never out of a game. Now the Pirates will turn their attention to Tuesday's Section X Class D Championship Game, where they'll face one of the hottest teams in the classification, Hermon-DeKalb. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Lawrence University. If Thursday's semifinal was any indication, softball fans should expect another unforgettable battle with a title on the line.
