For five innings, the Section X Class D Softball Championship was everything fans hoped it would be. A pitcher's duel. A defensive battle. Two talented teams trading punches with a sectional title hanging in the balance. Then Hermon-DeKalb delivered a championship-winning knockout. Trailing 1-0 deep into the game, the Green Demons erupted for a massive sixth inning and never looked back, capturing the Section X Class D Championship with a 12-5 victory over top-seeded Harrisville at St. Lawrence University. The title marks a remarkable accomplishment for Hermon-DeKalb and Head Coach Bob Bice, whose team played disciplined, fundamentally sound softball throughout the postseason and saved its best performance for the biggest stage. For much of the evening, however, runs were nearly impossible to come by. Hermon-DeKalb's Maya Green was dominant in the circle from the opening pitch. Green carried a perfect game into the middle innings, frustrating a dangerous Harrisville lineup and keeping the Pirates searching for answers. Harrisville finally broke through when Avery Chartrand stepped to the plate and changed the complexion of the game with one swing. Chartrand ripped a triple to break up Green's perfect game bid and later came around to score, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead and igniting the Harrisville crowd. That lone run stood up for several innings as both teams continued to battle in what felt like a championship heavyweight fight. One of the game's biggest moments came in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Lo Patchin blasted a ball into the gap and raced around the bases for a triple. As the ball got away from the third baseman, Harrisville aggressively sent Patchin home in an attempt to add a critical insurance run. The play at the plate was bang-bang. Patchin was ruled out, ending the threat and preserving the one-run margin. Instead of extending the lead, the Pirates were left wondering what might have been. Hermon-DeKalb took advantage. The Green Demons carried the momentum from the defensive stop into the sixth inning and unleashed an offensive explosion. After being held in check for most of the game, the bats suddenly came alive. Hit after hit found grass, runners flooded the bases, and the Green Demons capitalized on every opportunity. What had been a tense 1-0 contest quickly turned into a multi-run Hermon-DeKalb lead. The Green Demons continued to pour it on in the seventh inning, adding insurance runs and turning a one-run deficit into a championship celebration. Harrisville continued to battle and eventually put runs on the board late, but the damage had already been done. When the final out was recorded, Hermon-DeKalb had completed a stunning turnaround and secured a 12-5 victory. The championship performance showcased everything that made the Green Demons successful this season: strong pitching, disciplined at-bats, timely hitting, and outstanding coaching. For Harrisville, the loss ends an outstanding season that saw the Pirates reach the sectional championship game and spend much of the year atop the Class D rankings. For Hermon-DeKalb, however, this night belonged to them. After falling to Harrisville twice during the regular season, the Green Demons saved their best for last, defeating the Pirates on the biggest stage of all and bringing the Section X Class D Championship trophy back to Hermon-DeKalb.
