One Swing, One Play, One Season: Cincinnatus Edges Hermon-DeKalb in Extra Innings Sometimes the scoreboard tells you everything. Sometimes it tells you almost nothing. Friday's Class D Regional Final between Hermon-DeKalb and Cincinnatus fell firmly into the second category. For seven innings, runs were harder to find than sunshine during a North Country rainstorm as two outstanding pitching staffs traded zeros in a classic postseason pitchers' duel. Every inning felt like it could be the one that changed everything. Every baserunner felt enormous. Every pitch carried the weight of an entire season. Hermon-DeKalb's combination of Maya Green and Lauren Bishop was magnificent in the circle, limiting a potent Cincinnatus lineup to just a handful of hits and keeping the Green Demons within striking distance all afternoon. Unfortunately for HD, the Eagles had an ace of their own. The Cincinnatus starter was dominant from the opening pitch, tossing a complete-game eight-inning performance while piling up double-digit strikeouts. Every time Hermon-DeKalb threatened, she found another gear. For six innings, neither team could crack the code. Then came the seventh. Cincinnatus finally broke through by manufacturing a run the old-fashioned way. A hit, some well-executed small ball, a runner moved into scoring position, and a sacrifice fly gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead and put Hermon-DeKalb on the brink. The Green Demons refused to go quietly. Facing their final out in the bottom of the seventh, HD mounted one last charge. They loaded the bases and scratched across the tying run, bringing the crowd to its feet and sending tension levels through the roof. Then came the moment everyone will remember. Two outs. Full count. Bases loaded. Season on the line. A Hermon-DeKalb hitter ripped a ball down the third-base line that looked destined for extra bases and perhaps much more. But the Cincinnatus third baseman made a tremendous defensive play, stealing a potential game-winning hit and preserving the tie. Just like that, the game headed to extra innings. In the eighth, the Eagles capitalized on an HD error and followed it with timely hitting. A couple of clutch knocks quickly turned a tie game into a 4-1 advantage. This time, Cincinnatus wouldn't let the opportunity slip away. The Eagles closed out the victory and punched their ticket to the next round, ending one of the most memorable seasons in Hermon-DeKalb softball history. The final score may read 4-1, but anyone who watched knows this game was much closer than that. It was a battle of pitching. A battle of defense. A battle of nerves. And for seven innings, neither team blinked. Hermon-DeKalb's season comes to an end, but the Green Demons leave with a Section X championship, a regional final appearance, and a season their community will remember for a long time. Sometimes a season isn't defined by the last score. Sometimes it's defined by how hard a team fought before the final out. And Hermon-DeKalb fought until there were none left.
