Golden Bears Bring the Lumber, Punch Ticket to Regional Final If crooked numbers win softball games, Canton brought a whole geometry lesson to St. Lawrence University on Friday. The Golden Bears wasted absolutely no time putting pressure on Marcellus, scoring in every inning they came to the plate and rolling to a convincing 16-3 victory in the New York State Class B Subregional. Canton's offense was locked in from the opening pitch. Three runs crossed in the first inning. Three more followed in the second. Holding a 6-2 advantage, the Golden Bears stepped on the gas and never looked back, adding four runs in the third and six more in the fourth to turn a competitive game into a Canton celebration. The Bears pounded out 15 hits and kept the Marcellus defense under constant pressure. Every time the Mustangs looked for an opening, Canton slammed the door and opened another inning-long traffic jam on the basepaths. Tessa Alguire was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game victory while helping her own cause at the plate. Alguire finished with four hits, scored three runs, and drove in two more as part of the offensive explosion. Elle White matched the fireworks with a huge afternoon of her own, collecting four hits, scoring three runs, and driving in two RBIs. Shaylee Olmstead and Harper Evie added fuel to the offensive fire, each recording two hits and scoring twice as Canton kept the line moving from top to bottom. Marcellus managed five hits on the afternoon, but the Golden Bears' relentless attack proved too much to overcome. With the win, Canton advances to the New York State Class B Regional Final, where the Bears will square off against Chatham of Section II on Saturday at Lansingburgh High School. One game remains between Canton and a trip to the state semifinals. If Friday was any indication, the Golden Bears plan on bringing plenty of bats to the party.
